It’s been a nearly seven-hour drive, but we’ve arrived: McMenamin’s Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon. The familiar buildings wrap around us like a big hug. The spring flowers are just starting to bloom, while the vineyard that faces the main entrance like a sentinel, still sits dormant from the long winter. As usual, there are people milling around the grounds, walking from one building to another, chattering, carrying their drinks openly— a big perk here. The smell of grilled burgers lingers in the air, drawing us in for a bite. But first, a quick stop in the main lodge to pick up a bottle of McMenamin’s own Billy Whiskey in the gift shop to take with us. Finally, our table is ready at the Power Station Pub. We order the “Scooby Snacks” — McMenamin’s answer to a corn dog without the stick — and a pint of the Terminator Stout, a flavor-packed, dark, and creamy ale with a smooth, chocolatey finish. It’s the perfect end to a long day. Regretfully, we can’t stay this time. This is only a short stop-over for a longer trip, but we can’t go through Portland without popping in to say hello to our beloved Edgefield.
